The Jr Sous Chef works in support of the Sous Chef and Chef de Cuisine to provide a high standard of food production at all times. The Jr Sous Chef supervises the staff of the kitchen in conjunction with the Sous Chef and Chef de Cuisine participating in the training and development of staff and also provides input for performance appraisals and disciplinary action. He/she manages the kitchen in compliance with all health and safety regulations by ensuring adherence to sanitary and safe food handling guidelines at all times.

What you can expect as a Jr. Sous Chef

  • Tests food prior to its delivery to the customers to ensure high quality and taste.
  • Assist Chef de Cuisine and Sous Chef in menu creation, menu standards and recipe requirements.
  • Monitors portion sizes and food preparation methods to guarantee proper presentation and a high level of consistency.
  • Communicates the vision to all team members, does so verbally, through action and leading by example.
  • Monitors the popularity of food items to see what the customers are ordering and plans meal specials accordingly.
  • Be on-hand to greet guests and answer any questions they may have.
  • Responsible for the training of new staff and overseeing their performance.
  • Ensure employees are trained on their job duties, food preparation, food delivery, customer service, sanitation and safety procedures.
  • Handling sharp knives and other equipment (such as slicers)
  • Must work with the potential for slick floors in cutting room.
  • Exposure to temperature extremes (freezers, coolers, store temperature, outside temperatures).
  • Proximity to open flames and heat.

What we are looking for

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a Junior Sous Chef position
  • Minimum of 3 years' combined experience in the trade of cook.
  • Extensive knowledge of food handling and sanitation standards.
  • Effective decision making skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain relationships e.g., associates, customers, vendors.
  • Strongly demonstrated creativity in all areas relating to food.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, with a positive attitude and a consistent display of professionalism.
  • Innovative, detail oriented, and quality conscious.
  • Ability to recognize, influences, and follow food service trends in preparation and presentation.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to break down and reassemble all equipment in the dept for sanitation purposes.
  •  Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Ability to be on standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • Ability to perform repetitive work which requires full use of both hands
